This course will provide the attendee with the skills needed to conduct Sexual Abuse and Sexual Harassment investigations within a confinement setting. The course is designed to meet all aspects of PREA Standard, 115.34 Specialized Training: Investigations. The training includes techniques for interviewing sexual abuse victims, proper use of Miranda and Garrity warnings, sexual abuse evidence collection in confinement settings, and the criteria and evidence required to substantiate a case for administrative action or prosecution referral. The training will include a presentation by the local victim advocacy center on interacting with traumatized victims of sexual abuse.

Instructional Objectives:
After completion, the student will be able to:
- Understand the PREA Standards that apply to investigations of sexual abuse and sexual harassment in confinement settings.
- Have the skills to interact with traumatized victims during the investigation.
- Be able to utilize the skills learned to interview victims, witnesses, and suspects/offenders.
- Understand the process of investigating incidents/crimes, specifically sexually motivated crimes.
- Understand the proper application of Miranda warnings and Garrity warnings.
- Have the skills to identify and collect evidence in a confinement setting.
- Understand the criteria and level of evidence needed to substantiate an administrative or criminal investigation.
- Understand the prosecutorial process and referral requirements of investigations.
